Google Gemini Expected to Be the Next Apple Intelligence Partner

The race to partner with Apple on AI is heating up, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects Google’s Gemini to be next chatbot integrated into Apple Intelligence.

At WWDC, Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, announced a deal with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Apple devices. During the keynote, he said deals with other AI companies were possible; later that day, he said Apple “may look forward to doing integrations with different models like Google Gemini in the future.”

At the time, Federighi stressed he had “nothing to announce right now.” Gurman says Google and Anthropic are likely contenders, and he expects Google “at least…to be announced around the time Apple Intelligence launches this fall.”

This comes following rumors that Apple had talks with Meta, Anthropic, and Perplexity. However, sources told Gurman that Meta was ruled out due to privacy concerns.

Whichever company lands on Apple Intelligence, there will reportedly be no money exchanged, at least to start. Apple is pitching a presence on its devices—and a potential uptick in subscribers for ChatGPT Plus and other premium chatbots—as payment enough. Apple’s iOS had more than half of US smartphone OS market share in March, according to Statista.

Eventually, however, Apple may launch its own premium AI service, possibly Apple Intelligence+, and take a cut of AI partner revenue, in part to counter “the slowing pace of hardware upgrades,” Gurman notes.
